These Commitments address significant changes in
quantity or quality of hydraulic conditions in the drainages surrounding the Sunnyside Mine.
Due to an extremely wet summer season in the Animas Basin, all drainages are experiencing
increased flow over normal from all sources. While this is a regional phenomenon, SGC is
reporting the flow from the Mogul Level No.l (M-1) as a potential change in quality and
quantity. We have insufficient information to know whether this flow may be related to the
flooding of the Sunnyside Mine workings which requires reporting in Commitments #1 and#2
and the TR-014 approval letter dated November 18, 1993,but;the flow is significant;the quality
is significantly different from Sunnyside's background data set; the flow is significantly higher
than previously measured; and the monitoring site is below the level of the mine pool.
Proportionally, other nearby sites have experienced similar flow changes in the same time period
and are above the mine pool elevation. Current analytical data is not available from these sites
due to the monitoring schedule.
Enclosed for your review are monitoring results for site M-1. After receiving the September
sample results and recognizing the variance from the data set, Sunnyside had the results
confirmed and expedited another sample with characterization parameters added to the normal
monitoring suite. Although there are characterization parameter differences from the pre-
bulkhead sample, the comparison is closer to the pre-bulkhead sample results than to American
Tunnel mine pool characterization results (attached).
Based on the characterization comparison, temperature(too cold), and inability to account for a
loss of mine pool inflow based on pressure gage readings (pool rise), Sunnyside does not believe
