TERRY TUNNEL AREA
Eureka Creek (EC-1) Table 14 , Figure 3
Figure 3 shows the trend in increased Zinc and TDS which
appears in the summer of 1989 probably due to decreased flow
quantity. High TSS on the last sample of the year is
probably due to road traffic above the mine.
PART V - NPDES DISCHARGE DATA
NPDES discharge points and limits remained the same. A
Biomonitoring amendment was attached to permits for AT004
and MF002. Bioassays of these two sites commenced in the
lst quarter of 1990 . Results of the Bioassay tests are
inconsistent and not well understood at this time. AT004
passed the Biotest for both species in the first quarter;
failed the test for ueriodaphnia dubia and passed the
Fathead Minnow test in the second quarter. MF002 failed the
test for both species in the first quarter, passed for both
species in the second quarter . The company is following
procedures outlined in the permit amendment in order to
comply with the regulations and determine the nature of the
problem.
As testing continues causes and solutions should become
apparent.
MF002 - Mayflower Mill Discharge - Table 15
The change to subaerial deposition and recycling water to
the mill caused some changes in the duality of the mill
effluent. As a consequence, concentrations of some total
metals and ph outside the permit limits were reported in the
past year . In each case efforts to remedy the situation.
As experience is gained with the new tailings pond system
the mill should return to the more normal situation of being
within permit limits on a consistent basis .
AT004 - American tunnel Discharge - Table 16 , Figure 4 and
Figure 5
The mine discharge continued the trend toward meeting NPDF.S
limits consistently. The installation of a gated pipe inlet
on Pond 1 in October eliminated the short circulating- c, ,rrz.,+ '
problem which caused many of the TSS violations in the past.
The company continues to work on ungr_acting the facility T,ai th
projects such as back up treatment improvement , 1. a=,^
removal upgrades , and better maintenance programs being
researched.
-10-
