1
°v, ` STATE OF COLORADO
•` %' Roy Romer, Governor
 87
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Director
February 28. 1989
Mr. Larry Perino
Sunnyside Gold Corporation
P.O. Box 177
Silverton, Colorado 81433
Re: Sunnyside Gold Corporation' s "Sunnyside Mine and Mill ", File Number
M-77-378, San Juan County
Dear Mr. Perino:
The technical revision submitted to the Division, correlatina the final
disposal of waste rock aenerated form minina the Sunnvside and Washington open
pits with the backfilling and final reclamation of the Lake Emma Stope in the
Sunnvside Basin, has been reviewed by the Division. The Droposed reclamation
plan, incorporating mitioation of potential acid Droduction resultina from
waste rock materials, is conceptually acceptable to the Division.
Upon review of the proposal , the following need for clarification or
suggestions arose:
1 . Is the "rocky overburden" proposed for the top three feet of fill the
topsoil resource salvaged and stockpiled prior to excavation of the Sunnyside
and Washington pits?
2. It is suggested that the top two feet of the fill material , either the
overburden or topsoil placed atop the overburden, not be compacted, but left
as a friable plant growth medium, followed by revegetation. The original Lake
Emma reclamation plan included establishment of reveo_ etation test plots to
determine of the lake sediments and/or topsoil cover could support plant
growth for reveoetation of the stope fill . It is my understanding that the
revegetation test plots were constructed this Dast summer. The Division
prefers that the surface of the stope fill be stabilized with a plant cover to
minimize erosion of the finer particle sizes from the surface. Please discuss.
3. Please Drovide the reveaetation test plot designs, construction
specifications, monitorina and reportina results, etc. to complete the
Division' s files.
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.(303) 866-3567
