Slope Evaluation and Remediation
West Elk Mine
Somerset, Colorado
inches per day or feet per year, presumably when wetted or as surcharge pressures
build. The goal of this project is to attempt to define the limits of the recent landslide as
well as provide recommendations regarding stabilization of the slope in this area.
SITE CONDITIONS
The site exists as an active
subsurface coal mine at the time of
our subsurface exploration. The
recent landslide feature is active
within a buried gully that we
understand was in- filled by the mine.. -
The observed vegetation on the site -
generally consisted of native
grasses, weeds, and brush
extending beyond the disturbed
areas. The site was bordered by an unpaved haul / access road and coal storage pile to
the south and west, conveyor belts and operation buildings to the east, and State
Highway 133 to the north. The site was sloping down to the north at gradients of
approximately 50 percent (2(H) : 1(V)). The elevation difference across landslide feature
was approximately 30 to 40 feet.
SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION
The subsurface exploration for the
project was conducted on September
5, 2011. Five (5) test holes were
drilled within or above the recent
landslide feature. Test holes were
drilled using a track mounted drill rig
to depths of approximately 15 to 40
feet below the existing grades to
evaluate subsurface conditions, as
well as to retrieve samples for
laboratory testing and analysis.
-- -,:
.
s
Job No. 11 -6014 GROUND Engineering Consultants, Inc.
