Slope Evaluation and Remediation
West Elk Mine
Somerset, Colorado
place during earthwork construction. The remaining potential settlements likely will take
several months or longer, to be realized.
Surface Drainage and Re- Vegetation The finished surface of the buttress fill should
be designed to drain effectively.
A drainage Swale ( "brow ditch ") should be constructed around the upslope margin of the
buttress to direct surface waters downslope around the fill.
The finished surface will be subject to erosional raveling and local sloughing, particularly
until vegetation is well re- established. Therefore, the buttress fill and adjacent areas
should be re- vegetated as quickly as possible to limit erosion and reduce soil moisture.
The finished surface of the buttress should be maintained following construction to repair
areas of settlement and erosion until vegetation is well re- established. Multiple re-
vegetation events are commonly required to establish growth on 2:1 (horizontal
vertical) slope angles.
Post - Remediation Monitoring GROUND recommends that after remedial construction
has been completed, approximately 6 survey monitoring points be established within the
area of the buttress fill, as well as an appropriate reference point outside the subject
area. These survey monitoring points then can be used to evaluate the extent of post-
construction settlement as well as to quantify any future slope movements.
CLOSURE
Geotechnical Review The author of this report should be retained to review project
plans and specifications to evaluate whether they comply with the intent of the
recommendations in this report. The review should be requested in writing.
The geotechnical recommendations presented in this report are contingent upon
observation and testing of project earthworks by representatives of GROUND. If another
geotechnical consultant is selected to provide materials testing, then that consultant
must assume all responsibility for the geotechnical aspects of the project by concurring
in writing with the recommendations in this report, or by providing alternative
recommendations.
Job No. 11 -6014 GROUND Engineering Consultants, Inc.
