Box 1020
Craig, CO 81626 -1020
Mr. Mikesell:
In 1985, Getty Mining Company completed fourteen hydrologic monitoring wells under the Federal coal
exploration license COC40288. On October 3, 1985, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) accepted
long term liability, including liability for plugging and abandonment, for these hydrologic monitoring
wells. These monitoring wells were never permitted through the State of Colorado. The BLM is
considering options for these monitoring wells.
On July 29, 2009 the BLM conducted a site visit of these monitoring wells with you. During the site visit,
the possibility that the landowner, Reserve Coal Properties, would accept the liability for these wells and
permit them with the State of Colorado was mentioned. The BLM would like to pursue this option. If
this option is not available, BLM will plug and abandon the wells.
Please contact Jennifer Maiolo at (970) 826 -5077 or at the mailing address above to discuss Reserve Coal
Properties decision with regards to these monitoring wells.
Sincerely,
Wendy Reynolds
Field Manager
cc:
Kent Gorham
CDRMS
1313 Sherman St. Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
United States Department of the Interior
BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT
Little Snake Field Office
455 Emerson Street
Craig, Colorado 81625 -1129
http: / /www.co.blm.gov /lsra/index.htm
May 21, 2012
