Limited - Results Archaeological Survey Form (Page 3 of 7)
17. Comments: There is no connected action between the seven drill sites.
IV. ENVIRONMENT
18. General Topographic Setting: The project area is located west of Twentymile Park and
northeast of the Hillberry Mountains. The town of Oak Creek is 15 miles southeast of the project
area via CR27. Two main drainages within the project area are Sage Creek and Scotchman's
Gulch. The area drains in a northerly direction, eventually emptying into the Yampa River. Much
of the area has been previously impacted via Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) activities
and power line construction projects.
Current Land Use: Livestock grazing and limited hunting.
19. Flora: Five drill sites (CCU77, 81, 83, 84 & 86) are in undisturbed areas with native vegetation
consisting of sagebrush, grasses, shrubs and forbs, while CCU31 & 75 are in areas that are
heavily vegetated with CRP grasses, a scattering of forbs, and a few small sagebrush plants.
20. Soils /Geology: Surface sediments are predominantly colluvial with evidence of some slope
washing activity. CCU31 is predominantly residual in nature and has been plowed and re-
vegetated. In general the surface soils are a dark brown clayey loam with low densities of
gravels and cobbles. Subsurface geology is composed of sandstone, shale and major coal beds
of the Williams Fork Formation which are sedimentary and igneous rocks from the Early Tertiary
and Late Cretaceous Age (Tweto 1979).
21. Ground Visibility: Surface visibility is considered good (at 50 %) for the five locations in native
undisturbed surfaces. CCU31 & 75 locations are poor surface visibility due to the thick CRP
grass cover; visibility is 20% in these areas. However, some areas afford views of the
subsurface via animal trails, two tracks, eroded areas, and rodent back dirt piles.
22. Comments:
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23.
