Chapter IV
- Located exploration roads so that erosion and sedimentation impacts will be
minimal.
- Located topsoil stockpiles to minimize the potential for increasing sediment in
nearby streams.
The Adit/Rock Tunnel allows better control of mine water discharges.
Mid-Continent uses aluminum sulfate (alum) as necessary for adequate settling at the
tunnel ponds above outfall #016. MLRD earlier approved use of a flocculant, Nalcolyte
8103 Potable Coagulant, in the sediment pond system. (Minor Revision , Dec. 3, 1984).
Mid-Continent has calibrated the concrete box by the front gate and the 12" cmp that
goes from the small pond to the large pond at No. 1 Mine in order to maintain the
dosage as closely as possible to 1 or 2 ppm.
4. Other Methods to Protect or Enhance Wildlife.
Based on the evaluation of existing fish and wildlife data, Mid-Continent has no
identified (4.18(2)) or endangered species of plants or animals or their critical habitats in
or adjacent to the permit area (See Appendices III-A-1 & III-A-2). If any threatened or
endangered plants, animal or aquatic species or habitat is discovered on the permit
area the regulatory authority will be notified in writing. The closest area where
endangered species (black footed ferret, river otter, peregrine falcon) have been
identified is lcoated south of Paonia, Colorado, which is over fifty miles from Coal Basin.
Golden Eagles are common year around residents of Colorado and are not known to
hunt the permit area even though the prey base is available. Bald Eagles winter along
the Colorado River near Glenwood Springs but they do not use the permit or adjacent
area.
The existing electrical power distribution lines have been constructed so that raptors will
not be electrocuted if they should visit the permit area.
If any future electrical distribution systems are constructed they will be designed in
accordance with REA Bulletin 61-10 specifications.
Mid-Continent will not use pesticides in the mine plan area.
Mid-Continent will, to the extent possible, prevent, control and suppress all range and
coal fires.
5
7/ITy
