unapter 1v <br />These permits, as approved, require Mid - Continent to monitor oint discharge <br />points for flow, total dissolved solids, iron, manganese, pH and oil and grease, and <br />to send in quarterly reports. <br />b. Ground Water. <br />Ground water in the permit area is being monitored using ground water <br />observation wells in order to detect adverse water quality and changes in the <br />ground water flow system (Exhibit IV -C -1). The alluvial well system is primarily <br />used to detect changes in the ground water flow system (Exhibit IV -C -1). The <br />alluvial well system is primarily used to detect changes resulting from surface <br />facility impacts. The wells are also being monitored for static water levels to <br />determine if the base flow ground water component is, or will be, depleted by the <br />mining operations. The fifteen wells in the mine plan area (See Exhibit VI -C -1), are <br />measured and sampled bi- annually. In addition, ground water observation wells <br />will be installed in refuse and tunnel spoil disposal areas to detect if infiltrating <br />water is leeching undesirable minerals from the spoil. The wells will also check <br />pore water pressure which, if it does exist, will provide an early warning that the fill <br />could be structurally unsound. See Appendix III -E -2, Figure III -E -2, and Table <br />III -E -1 for ground water quality data. <br />Field Tests Lab Test <br />Flow Bicarbonate <br />Temperature Sulfate <br />pH Sodium <br />Conductivity Calcium <br />Chloride <br />Magnesium <br />Sodium Absorption Ratio <br />Iron <br />Total Dissolved Solids <br />c. Surface Water. <br />Mid - Continent has been collecting surface water samples from up to ten . <br />monitoring points on a monthly basis since 1977, and from three points since <br />1974. Now that water quality data base has been established, the company will <br />continue to collect samples from six key monitoring points: Nos. 3, 5, 20, and <br />Sutey 1, 2 and 3) as indicated on Exhibit IV -C -1. The three Sutey points were <br />added in 1984 for the new coal refuse pile area.
