Approximately 350-400 elk make up the <br /> resident herd, which shows a continual upward trend . Much <br /> of the winter habitat is on private and BLM lands outside <br /> the National Forest boundary. The deer population is estimated <br /> to be around 900 head with a downward trend . There is some <br /> overlapping of the use on winter range by both deer and elk . <br /> No endangered or threatened species are <br /> affected . <br /> Birds commonly found in the Thompson <br /> Creek Planning Unit include : Goshawks , Grey Jay, White- <br /> crowned Sparrows , Blackcapped Chickadees , Pine Grossbeaks , <br /> Tree Swallows , Williamson ' s Sapsucker , Robins , Gray-headed <br /> Juncos , Blue Grouse, Mountain Blue Birds , Kestrels , Raven, <br /> Red Tailed Hawks , Golden Eagles , Blackbilled Magpies , Rock <br /> Wrens , Horned Larks , Water Pipet and Rosy Finchs . <br /> Within the White River National Forest , <br /> (Appendix III-I-3) mammals and bird species which are <br /> abundant or fairly common include : <br /> Abundant Distribution <br /> Chikaree Coniferous forests <br /> Montane vole District wide <br /> Deer mouse District wide <br /> Least chipmunk Conifer forest <br /> Pika Alpine talus <br /> -31- <br />
