A water quality investigation of the Crystal
River drainage was undertaken by the Colorado Department of
Health, in 1978 , under the direction of Peter Mars . (See
Appendix III-I-4) .
Coal Creek flows into the Crystal at a point
4 miles below the preparation plant area, and was thus
included in the study .
Mr . Mars ' research included establishment of
representative sampling sites , which were then monitored on
a routine basis .
Water quality sampling stations were situated
in the Coal Creek drainage at sites which monitored water
draining both disturbed and undisturbed (by mining opera-
tions) areas .
Undisturbed area drainage sites were PC-1 ,
situated on Porcupine Creek above the confluence with Coal
Creek, and BC-1 , situated on Bear Creek above the confluence
with Coal Creek.
Samples taken of disturbed area drainage
included DC-1 , situated on Dutch Creek above the confluence
with Coal Creek, and three sites along Coal Creek, including
CC-3 , above the confluence with Porcupine Creek; CC-1 , above
the confluence with Dutch Creek; and CC-1, above the con-
fluence with Spring Creek.
Sampling data from the Porcupine Creek station
indicate that recommended limits for cold water biota are
exceeded by the cadmium, lead , copper and iron concentrations .
-21-
