W%WM
inannounwnioi,
3. The 1977-1979 terraces could withstand moderate grazing by livestock.
Livestock should be allowed to graze ad lib. without being bunched or
driven. Short duration grazing with high stocking rates is not recommended.
Low stocking rates over a longer period of time are recommended. Low
stocking rates would reduce travel time and trampling while longer grazing
duration would increase forage utilization.
4. Introduced pasture species are well adapted to this site and very effective in
establishing cover and good quality forage. Many of these species are
naturalized in mountain environments. Continued utilization of these
species in mixtures with natives seems justified.
5. Shrub and trees are established on the terraces, but are still small and
inconspicuous. Shrub and tree density on reclaimed areas could be increased
with increased planting densities. Methods to reduce competition between
woody seedlings and herbaceous species would be helpful in encouraging
woody plant establishment and growth.
6. Vegetative cover and production on future reclaimed terraces would be
enhanced by ensuring a more uniform topsoil replacement depth, with a
minimum of 30 cm (12 inches).
7. Revegetation will also be more successful if steepness of final slopes can be
minimized. Revegetation of slopes steeper than 2(h):l(v) may be difficult.
7
