r in-L.-L-inounwn.Noi,
7
The meadow vegetation type is dominated by timothy, Kentucky bluegrass
and orchardgrass. Grasses comprise 69 percent of the total vegetation
cover, which is 99 percent. Common dandelion is the dominant forb. Woody
species comprise only 3 percent of the total vegetation cover. The meadow
type is the most productive.of the three vegetation types. Mean herbaceous
production of the meadow type measured 242 grams of oven-dry vegetation
per square meter.
The aspen vegetation type is dominated almost equally by grasses and forbs.
Woody plants, primarily western snowberry, comprise about 10 percent of
the total understory vegetation cover. Dominant grasses are blue wildrye
and Kentucky bluegrass. The high woody plant density measured for this
type, equivalent to over 1,500 plants per acre, reflects relative abundance
of western snowberry in the understory. Total vegetation cover is 93
percent and mean herbaceous production is 177 grams of oven-dry
vegetation per square meter.
The mountain shrub vegetation type is considerably more variable than the
aspen or meadow types. Total vegetation cover is 92 percent. Mean
herbaceous production for 50 samples is 98 grams of oven-dry vegetation per
square meter. Standard deviations for both production and woody plant
density are high relative to the respective means, indicating high variability
which is typical of the mountain shrub vegetation type. The dominant grass
species is Kentucky bluegrass. Two dominant forbs are Engelmann aster and
leafybract aster. The dominant shrub, in terms of vegetation cover, is
western snowberry. Other shrubs common in this type are gambel oak and
serviceberry.
Statistical sample adequacy was achieved for each type for cover and
production, except as noted below. Sample adequacy for woody plant
density was not achieved on the mountain shrub type, due to
