September 8 , 1981
Mr . Jim Herron
Mined Land Reclamation
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver , CO 80203
RE : 2 . 04 . 10 Vegetation Information
Dear Jim,
This letter is to clarify the vegetation program in Coal
Basin. After our meeting of August 28 in which I met with
you and Dave Johnston of Western Resource Development , I
jotted down the following from my notes :
I . 10, 000-foot Elevation; Mine Pads , Road and
Miscellaneous Disturbed Areas .
Mid-Continent will install a test plot area adja-
cent to the No . 3 Mine lower bin in which a soil
amendment will be applied (wood chips and sludge) .
This area will be monitored on an annual basis
(historical data collection) for a period of five
years . The basis of this study will be the guide-
lines in which all reclamation will be done at
this elevation .
II . 9 , 000-foot Elevation, plus or minus ; All Roads and
Disturbed Areas between Wash Plant and Mine Portals .
These areas will be tabled until the completion of
the tunnel project to re-evaluate actually how much
of the road will be reclaimed . This will take into
account stability , USFS use , base-line data collec-
tion, etc . An evaluation will be made at the end
of the current five-year permit .
III . 8 , 000-foot Elevation; Wash Plant , Bath House and
Present Coal Refuse Disposal Area .
The existing 8 , 000 ' reference plot will be used as
the guideline for the revegetation of this area .
NOTE : The presently submitted reclamation costs for all
of Coal Basin (mine portals , road , wash plant , etc . ) will be
used as the basis for bond release .
If you have any questions or suggestions , please call .
Sincerely,
S/Doug Bowman
Environmental Coordinator
1 . 1
