Organic matter : Tests of the permit area showed
the percent of organic matter contents range from low to
very high, the high levels are obviously due to large
amounts of coal material in many of the areas.
Samples in the tunnel area (1979) indicated a
great deal of organic matter is present (common to forest
soils) .
Major Plant Nutrients : Testing in the permit area
indicates major plant nutrients (nitrate-nitrogen, Phos-
phorous and potassium) are relatively low.
Samples of the tunnel area (1979) indicated higher
potassium content of the soils , sufficient to support vegeta-
tive growth. Further, several of the nitrate concentrations
are relatively high, except samples taken in the Mancos
Shale, which showed very low concentrations of all the
components .
7. Topsoil
Topsoil is generally thin in the permit area. Topsoil will
be salvaged as required in areas of surface disturbance, anticipated to
be in the Sutey refuse disposal area, and in conjunction with construction
of additional sedimentation ponds.
Topsoil redistribution has been done, although not completed,
on the old coal refuse pile. The redistributed topsoil consists of
A and B horizon material, the only soil available in the area, spread
14
