Tests of the tunnel area ( 1979) indicated that the
SAR of all materials is quite low, indicating very low
sodium hazards .
Particle Size Analysis : All of the samples taken
in the permit area indicate, with two exceptions , sandy loam
soil . The sandy loam contains coarse sandstone fragments
which are variable in size .
The exceptions are sample No . 9 (Dutch Creek
No . 2) and Sample No . 10 (Dutch Creek No . 1) , which indicate
sandy clay soil .
For percentages of sand (coarse) , silt (fine) and
clay (very fine) from each of the soil samples see Table
III-G-6 .
Overall , the soils support relatively great amounts
of vegetation, indicating good quality soils . If disturbed ,
revegetation should be able to proceed with a minimum of
effort and fertility amendments , provided that the Mancos
shale portions of the profiles are not incorporated to any
great degree into the overlying soils .
Iron, manganese: DTPA-extractable iron and
manganese levels range from medium to high. These high
levels are probably due to the nature of the coal material
found in abundance in many of the disturbed areas .
Samples of the tunnel area (1979) indicated that
iron content of the soils is sufficient to support vegeta-
tive growth, except that the Mancos Shale samples showed low
concentrations .
-12-
