G . Soils Resource Information
1 . General description
In general, the soils of the area are a sandy loam
type of soil overlying Mancos shale and/or sandstone out-
crops . The soils are quite uniform in texture and class
throughout the basin with only minor localized variations .
They appear to have been formed from alluvial and windblown
deposits of weathered sandstone over Mancos shale from
surrounding sandstone uplifts .
Where the soils have been undisturbed , the organic
matter content is relatively high due to the lush vegetation
litter . The "A" horizons of the soils are shallow on the
steeper slopes of the area and range to quite deep on
flatter slopes and in and near stream beds . The "B" horizons
are generally sandstone fragment soils over a layer of
Mancos shale. In some cases , the fragments are quite large .
In several areas the Mancos shale has been exposed and has
been weathered into a silt loam type of soil . It remains a
relatively impermeable rock layer where it has not been
exposed .
The abundance of vegetation indicates at least a
good quality soil with respect to toxic substances and
elements .
Soils in the permit area have been inventoried ,
tested , and analysed by several soils consulting companies
commencing in 1979 . See Appendices III-F-1 through 5 to
1
