(sites 4, 5 , 6, 7, 9) , and water samples taken from inaffected
drainages, (sites 2, 3 , 8, 10) . The drainages below the mine
do bear waters slightly higher in total dissolved solids and
alkalynity than the averages for the ccntrol drainages .
In reviewing the monthly reports in Appendix D, it can be
observed that the highest concentrations of ions in the
waters occur during the winter months . It is during this
period that much of the water in the streams is derived from
mine pumpage and from outflow from the alluvial aquifer.
This would be expected, as waters pumped from the mine have
migrated from the surface and have spent considerable time in
residence in the rock mass overlying the mine . During this
residence time, the percolating waters will , to some degree,
leach minerals from the rock mass . Similarly, waters in the
alluvial aquifer pick up ions during their residence in the
alluvium. During the spring and summer, base flows from the
mine and aquifers are diluted with snowmelt thus somewhat
improving the average quality of water sampled.
In addition to the ongoing stream sampling, grab sampling of
discharges at the portals of the L. S . Wood, Bear Creek and
Dutch Creek mines was initiated in 1979 . Results from these
analysis , presented in Appendix E , confirms conclusions drawn
from evaluation of down stream samples .
Water Use
Eight adjudicated water rights lie in the Coal Creek Basin.
11
