HYDROLOGY OF THE COAL CREEK WATERSHED
Hydrologic Features
The primary stream in Coal Basin is Coal Creek, a perennial
stream, tributary to the Crystal River. This stream drains
an area of approximately 26 . 6 sq.mi. as depicted on Figure
783 . 16-2 . The streams tributary to Coal Creek whose upper
drainages originate in the mine lease area are, in a
clockwise direction around the basin, Bear Creek, South Fork
Dutch Creek, North Fork Dutch Creek, Oilwell Creek, Coal
Creek, and Porcupine Creek. (See Plate!!I-. ) Each of
these streams is ephemeral on the lease tract and becomes
perennial down gradient toward the plant site. The stream
classifications , drainage basin size, and other data
concerning these drainages are summarized in Table 783 . 16-3 ,
Coal Creek Basin Drainage Data. Other streams in Coal Basin
outside of the Coal Basin Mine affected area are Spring
Creek and Broderick Creek.
Six areas containing ponds or small lakes occur within the
Coal Creek drainage. The location of these ponds are given
below and are also shown on Plate I :
T . 10S . , R. 89W. , Sec. 4, SWl/4, NE1/4; 1 small pond on
a tributary of
Porcupine Creek
T. 10S . , R. 89W. , Sec. 7 , SW1/4, SE1/4; 1 small alpine lake
above Oilwell Creek
T. 10S . , R. 89W. , Sec. 8 , SE1/4, NE1/4; 1 small pond on
hillslope above
Oilwell Creek
