center of the Coal Basin Anticline. Locally, the Mancos shale
is altered or "baked" by the intrusion in the middle of the
anticline (Collins , 1977) . The Mancos shale is widespread
throughout western Colorado and is not generally considered
an aquifer.
Bedrock units beneath the Mancos shale outcrop as a portion
of the Grand Hogback east of the Coal Basin anticline and
west of Redstone. These bedrock units within the Coal Basin
mine adjacent area are the Cretaceous Dakota formation, the
Jurassic Morrison formation, the Jurassic Entrada sandstone,
the Permian Weber sandstone, and the Permo-Pennsylvanian
Maroon formation (Full, 1972) . Although these units
outcrop within the Coal Basin Mine adjacent area, they are
steeply dipping to the west and are located at depth below the
mine area. The dip of these units is significant as they are
dipping below the mine area, but at a depth sufficient to
result in no impact from the mining operation.
10
