Excavation of the moistened material commenced on 19 April 2012 and was completed on 01
May 2012. The first round of soil confirmation samples were collected on 02 May 2012.
Results received on 10 May 2012 indicated low levels of cyanide still remaining in the area
which were higher than desirable.
Excavation resumed on 14 May 2012 and was completed that same day. A second round of soil
confirmation sampling was also performed. Results are anticipated before 29 May 2012. Based
on this series of events, an estimate of the amount of cyanide spilled during this incident was
compiled using the following series of calculations.
Excavation Area
(Coincides with Sample Names)
Sub -Area
N -S Distance
North
Flat
40
E -W Distance
Average Depth
Total Amount Excavated
Appx Amount of Moist Material
Within this Area
Appx Amount of Contaminated
Material
UOM
ft
ft
ft
cu ft
cu ft
16
1
640
0%
0
North
Slope
41.5
16
4.5
2988
5%
149.4
East West
18
Corner
9
30
9
4860
10%
486
22
9.5
1881
5%
94.05
West
Triangle
8.5
50
3
1275
3%
38.25
Assuming 100% saturation of the 767.7 cubic feet of contaminated material and porosity of 40 %,
this calculates to 2,297 gallons of solution.
