( layers . The lowest potential aquifer is the Rollins sand-
stone member of the `Iesaverde Formation . Tne Rollins is the
base of the coal Series , overlieing the Mancos Shale
Four distinct coal beds have been identified
in the Coal Basin strata : the lowest is the bed ; above
it , the "B" bed ; above it the "M" or diddle bed; abode it
the "rlacita" bed . Coal is mined from the B bed and the
ggee Isopach maps at Exhibits III-D-1 and III-D-2 for
Middle beds . / In addition, fragments of the "Sunshine" seam,
those two seams .
which is mired some 10 miles to the north (by another
operator) , have been detected . The coal occurs above sand-
stone units . The Rollins Sandstone is beneath the ri and B
beds ; the diddle Sandstone is beneath the Middle bed ; and
the Upper Sandstone is beneath tn.e Piacita bed .
The .•zesaverde is zustor-naril.: described in
terms of a lower formation , called the Iles , and an upper
formation called the Williams Fork. The Iles Formation
overlies the Mancos Shale and, as noted , the Wif ll'-a-ms Fork
Formation overlies the Iles .
The Iles Formation consists of two sandstone
me beTj i'7idt'd by a 1 , 000 ' " tongue" of Shale . The lower
member , the Cozzette, is a 6-foot layer of verb' tine grained ,
si I t v Sandstone , which overlies a 40-1ooc thick layer of
s=1t; to sandy shale .
The uvoer sandstone member of the Iles forma-
tion known as the Rollins is 120 - i-0 ' ?_--hi ck , and worms
the base of the coal series . s-ale tongue of 5 ' to 30 '
 f%
9
