faults , there is an association in the first , second and
turd North entries of the Dutch Creek No • _ mine entry , and
in the drainage of Oilwell Creek between the do 3 and So
mine entries .
Faulting is a significant determinant of the
drainage pattern in the Coal Basin , having directly or
indirectly controlled Bear Creek, all forks of Dutch Creek,
both forks or Oilwell Creek, the south and north forks of
Goal Creek, and Porcupine Creek. Drainages above the bottom
of the Rollins Sandstone are strongly influenced by faulting
throughout the basin. , although Such influence cannot be
traced in the underlieing shales .
In common with other unroofed '_accoliths of
t^e area , t:ie Coal Basin features , in addition to the dikes .
a large area of baked shale near the center and numerous
apparently hydrothermal calcite veins . Moreover , the effect
of the igneous intrusion has apparently been a General
upo_ading of the coal rank in the basin .
C . Geologic stratibraphy
The strata of Coal Basin consist , principally ,
of Mancos Shale and the Mesaverde Group , in which the coal
seams occur . (See Figures III-D-1 and III-D-2) ^ The
:Marcos Shale is impermeable, and lies it a bed or 3 , 000 '
thic{mess , beneath the Mesaverde formation. The coal seams
overlie the sandstone members of the '_,Iesaverde formation ,
which is Wade up of a series of shale , sandstone and coal
-Also , see Par . 4 .b . of Section III-C for drill hole locations
and data .
