General statement
The coal deposits mined by Hid-Continent ' s
Coal Basin operations occur in the Mesaverde formation
dating from the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era . Two
seams are dined , the "B" bed and the "iiiddler' bed . LWO
Othier Coal seams in the 'Hesaverde formation n3Ve ai50 been
evaluated and are considered uneconomic to mine utilizing
cu.rrent mining methods . They are the " I " and riaCiLarr
beds .
Mid-Continent operates a comple_s of five
mines in the two developed seams or bees . mines No . 1 , 3 , 4
i and 5 are in the B bed and nine No . ? is in the Middle bed .
The B bed is lower .
