and the alluvial sands of East Muddy Creek and its tributaries .
Unconsolidated sediments occur in the Coal
Creek drainage . Sands and gravels derived from the Mesaverde
formation, the Mancos shale and older units make up the Coal
Creek alluvium which extends , although not continuously ,
from Coal Basin to the Crystal River . Coal Creek contains
alluvial materials in Coal Basin; however , this material
thins significantly where it flows through the water gap
formed in the Grand Hogback. Consequently , two alluvial
aquifer systems lie along Coal Creek to the confluence with
the Crystal River .
Tributaries of East Muddy Creek on the west
side of Huntsman Ridge are generally intermittent on the
lease area . Slopes are steep and the streams are more
erosive than depositional in character . No major alluvial
aquifer exists in the tributaries of East 'Muddy Creek on the
lease area . However , East Muddy Creek proper alluvium, in
the adjacent mine area is recharged through tributaries by
snowmelt . Since the lease area does not encroach upon the
aquifer and no surface facilities are to be located west of
Huntsman Ridge in this drainage, .,pining should not have an
effect on the alluvial aquifer in the East Muddy Creek
drainage .
S .
