regarding site specific characteristics of water rights ,
alluvial valley floors , and water uses is presented in
Section E of this Chapter .
b . Aquifers in the coal basin region .
The aquifers within the study area are the
Upper sandstones associated with the Placita coal seam,
tiliddle sandstones associated with the Middle coal seam, the
Rollins sandstones associated with the "B" coal seam and the
shallow alluvium.
Table III-C-2 lists the bedrock units in the
Coal Basin region and their ground water use based on regional
data throughout the Crystal River Valley and the Glenwood
Springs area (Brogden & Giles , 1976) . The alluvium is
regionally used as a primary source of ground water , especially
in the larger valley fill areas of the Crystal River and the
Roaring Fork River . The extensive basalt flows north of the
Coal Creek drainage are also used as a primary source of
ground water , especially in the Missouri Heights area , north
of the Colorado River .
Within the Coal Basin area , the only
geologic units potentially affected by mining are the
alluvial stream deposits and the Mesaverde formation. The
Wasatch formation outcrops west of the mine within the mine
adjacent area .
In 1959 , 'Mid-Continent undertook a drilling
program to determine coal reservas in the lease area west of
16
