for heating . The finer sixes were coked in the 249 beehive <br /> coke ovens at Redstone . The coke was also used in the <br /> smelters of the area for producing gold , silver , and other <br /> metals . <br /> In beehive ovens such as those used at Redstone , <br /> the by-product gases were not collected , but rather were <br /> burned off from small holes in the top of the ovens . The <br /> sight of hundreds of glowing red flames issuing from the <br /> ovens in the Rockv Mountain twilight was strangely beautiful , <br /> and one not easily forgotten . <br /> Complete towns were built at both Redstone and <br /> Coal Basin . They were both considered to be model mining <br /> towns--socially ahead of their time . Salaries were from <br /> $105 . 00 to $135 . 00 a month . <br /> Osgood believed that happy miners were productive <br /> ones , so the carps contained all the modern conveniences and <br /> were models of their time . A lodge built primarily to house <br /> single workers at Redstone also contained a large auditorium , <br /> where orchestra , band and glee club concerts were held <br /> regularly . Facilities for boxing , baseball , and ice-skating <br /> were also built : both communities boasted libraries and <br /> men ' s clubs , where miners and oven workers could relax after <br /> a hard day ' s work .
