There is water in the Dutch Creek drainage year-round, <br /> due to many seers and springs issuing from -the hillside! Carbondale <br /> Access to the study area is gained by .,raves' nd soutn from <br /> on Colorado 133 approximately 16.5 miles to the Coal Creek road, which is then <br /> traveled approximately 7.5 miles to Mid-Continent' s , mine. From here , one <br /> travels approximately .5 mile southwest on an existing_ road to the beginning <br /> of the new access road (flagged) (see map) . <br /> Gecloay/Soils <br /> The upper part of the Mesaverde Formation underlies the study area. <br /> These beds were deposited during the Upper Cretaceous oeriod and consist of <br /> interlayered sandstone, shale, and coal beds (Twe+..o, Mcench , and Reed 19i8) <br /> Larce sandstone bounders are scattered throughout the study area , especially <br /> near the too of Huntsman Ridge. <br /> Soils in the study area are dark, shaley/clayey !cams, formed in are shallow <br /> siduum from the underlying sandstone , shale, and coal begs becoTheming na�;�oi s?Pow <br /> and fairly dry near the upper elevations of the study dr_a, <br /> lower in the drainage. <br />
