Because of snow a sem- <br /> sonal transhumance was established between Coal Basin town site and <br /> Redstone or Carbondale. <br /> 1903 - Coal Basin Mine, Crystal River Railroad and Colorado Fuel & Iron <br /> Company acquired by George Gould and John D. Rockefeller. <br /> 1909 - January 12. Town abandoned during annual winter transhumance. <br /> 1909 - Early spring. Mine closed. A few families return to retrieve <br /> personal heirlooms and other valuables. <br /> Post-1909 - Local homesteaders and ranchers "salvage" entire houses as well a�z <br /> portions of others -or re-use. Seasonal destruction of townsite <br /> by avalanches and other national and human elements. <br /> 1955 - Coal Basin coal leases acquired by Leignton S.
