were appointed as postmaster. 10 <br /> On February 15, 1902 , the Coal Basin Club opened its doors <br /> for business. The Club had four main rooms : a card room, reading <br /> room, billiard room, and barroom as well as a private apartment <br /> for the manager. <br /> The barroom was located i.-.mediately behind the veranda. <br /> The billiard room was located in the first room to the right <br /> (Fig. 1, #31) , the card room being the first room (Fig. 1, #30) <br /> on the left. The reading room was located in the second room <br /> on the left. Beneath the north side of the building was a large <br /> cellar used for the storage of liquor and other bottled goodsll <br /> (Figure 6) . <br /> Because of financial difficulties in 1902 and 1903 , Osgood <br /> relinquished control of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company and the <br /> Coal Basin holding to George Gould and John D. Rockefeller. <br /> Population in the town fluctuated according to production, <br /> the population dropping from 269 in 1901 to 150 in 1905 . Wages <br /> varied from $80 . 00 to $160. 00 a month. Monthly rent for the <br /> company houses was $2 . 00 per room per month for 3 or 4 room houses, <br /> and $18 . 50 per month for 5 rooms. There were 53 four room <br /> houses, 7 three room houses, 2 six room houses, and 1 eight <br /> room house built for Superintendant Stewart.12 <br /> On January 12, 1909, the residents of Coal Basin packed only <br /> the necessities for the annual winter trip to the lower elevations <br /> of Redstone and Carbondale. During the spring of 1909 , national <br /> financial problems led to the decline of the smelter industry in <br /> western Colorado and the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company closed the <br /> mine permanently (Figure 7) . <br /> 10.
