B . Cultural and Historic Resource Information
1 . Archaeological Resources
Coal Basin is situated in the area analyzed in the
West-Central Colorado Coal Environmental Statement which
was prepared by the Montrose Office of the Bureau of Land
Management and made available to the public in early 1979 .
Although no archeological sites have been found in the Coal
Basin Mine Plan Area , the archaeological survey conducted
for the West-Central Colorado Coal Environmental Statement
provides an excellent coverage of the general aboriginal
background of the area . Pertinent portions of that prehistory
are repeated here to establish the basic culture of the Coal
Basin geographic area .
The archeological resources known to exist in
west-central Colorado are the result of occupation by various
human groups over the past 10, 000 years . There is some
limited evidence that Folsom-type big game hunters may have
used the area , pushing this date back further . The groups
of people who occupied west-central Colorado on a continuous
basis have been collectively termed the Uncompahgre Complex.
As an archaic stage of development , the Uncompahgre
Complex has been defined as a ccntinuous localized manifasta-
tion of human adaptation to the various ecological zones in
the area . The presumed level of organization was a band-
level society that revolved around seasonal exploitation of
the available resources by hunting and gathering .
1
