Forestry/timber : There are 5 , 190 acres of
forested land in Coal Basin consisting of the following :
Aspen stands - There are 3 , 646 . 9 acres of
Aspen stands in the Basin which are of generally poor form,
and at present have little commercial value .
Conifer stands - There are 1 , 480 acres in
Coal Basin forested by Spruce and Fir trees . Sixty percent
of the stands consist of poorly stocked mature stands with
Aspen intermixed and 40 . of the stands are in the pole and
sapling size classes . Only 220 acres are loggable with the
tractor logging system presently used in commercial timber
operations . Road construction costs and environmental
factors makes it uneconomical and infeasible to log the
small , scattered stands of timber .
Mixed Aspen , Conifer stands - There are
1063 . 1 acres forested in Aspen, Spruce and Fir trees which
are classified as poorly stocked , mature trees .
Source : U. S . Forest Service
White River National
Forest "Timber Report"
A substantial number of the pole and sapling
category trees which, the Forest Service notes , make up some
40% of the Spruce and Douglas Fir timber resource , can
probably be attributed to a planting program carried on by
Mid-Continent since 1972 .
?3
