999
4r
Kathy Kellogg ilt,
Clean Air Committee
Box 3133 OCT 211986
Breckenridge, CO 80424
October 20, 1986
Mined Land Reclamation Board
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St. , Room 423
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Sirs:
Enclosed are two photographs taken Saturday, September 20, 1986 of
the effects of high winds on the Climax tailings ponds at Fremont Pass.
They were taken on a return trip from Leadville to my home at Farmers
Corner between Frisco and Breckenridge. The air cleared considerably
in the vicinity of Ten Mile Canyon into Frisco, but the dust was
carried into the Farmers Corner area and was visible in the air when
I arrived there. The next morning my deck and car were covered with
a fine white dust which is not usually present.
The County Planning Department staff advised we report this to you.
We are also sending photos to the Air Pollution Control Division.
Our Board of County Commissioners has been advised.
We request that you investigate the Climax tailings ponds and whether
or not a violation is present if you have not yet done so. It is our
concern—tYa:t--th-iCg-pi;o-Ul-e-m may pose a health hazard to Summit and Lake
County residents and vacationers and would like you to share with us any
available information on the situation. As winter approaches, the
ponds will be covered with` snow but before and after that time, high
winds will re-create what you see in the photographs.
Thank you for your early reply.
Sincerely,
CLEAN AIR COMMITTEE
Kathy ellogg
