GTATF nF COLORS 0
N
** * III IIIIIIIIIIIII III Amer, Governor n
999
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
April 28, 1987
Mr. Jeffrey W. Todd
AMAX Mineral Resources Company
1707 Cole Boulevard
Golden, Colorado 80401 -3293
RE: Pre-Amendment File Review - Climax Molybdenum Company - Climax Mine -
File No. M-77-493
Dear Mr. Todd:
We have completed a general review of File No. M-77-493 and the attached
memorandum discusses the issues that should be addressed as you develop the
permit amendment for the Climax Mine. We have attempted to compile a
comprehensive review; however, additional issues may arise as we continue our
meetings during the upcoming field season.
The reclamation plan section of the Climax Mine amendment will be the most
important and perhaps the most difficult section to develop. As we have
discussed, the existing plan may not be adequate to ensure long term site
stability, achievement of a beneficial end-use or to ensure compliance with
the performance standards of C.R.S. 34-32-116. The revised plan should
include specific reclamation activities that will be initiated during 1987.
These will include the rock application procedures and the reclamation of the
Arkansas Aggregate area, but we also recommend that Climax should initiate
some type of large-scale revegetation test areas during 1987. A more detailed
discussion of this issue will follow.
The current operational status of the Climax Mine is also an important issue.
Temporary cessation may be an appropriate option; however, the issue must be
discussed with the Mined Land Reclamation Board. Please provide a statement
regarding the mine operation status as soon as a decision is finalized.
We are looking forward to working with you to develop a successful reclamation
plan for the Climax Mine. It is important to reiterate that this review is a
preliminary attempt to identify problems associated with the existing mining
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
