Cooper
470 Eric Drive
Boulder, Colorado 80303 i t
Dear Mr. Cooper: j
Your letter of October 6, 1987 regarding the need for cleanup of the AMAX
Climax site has been referred to me for response.
We share your concerns over the impacts that have occurred within the vicinity
of the AMAX Climax site. As you may know, the State has been active in
pursuing cleanup of impacts associated with past mining operations at several
locations within the State in the interest of protecting and restoring our
valuable environmental settings. The AMAX Climax operation is worthy of such
a concerted effort. That site is currently under the control of various
environmental regulatory programs with perhaps the most significant being
these administered by the Mine Land Reclamation Division in the Department of
Natural Resources and the Water Quality Control Division in this Department.
A significant restoration of the AMAX/Climax site will undoubtedly be a
difficult challenge to accomplish because of the magnitude of the overall
impacts that have occurred and the immense volume of materials that have been
processed and deposited. To date AMAX has signigicantly improved water
quality in Tenmile Creek through improved treatments, overall system
management and some site reclamation. Such actions are subject to review by
the Water Quality Control Division and require compliance with permit
conditions.
The Mine Land Reclamation Division's permit for the site is nearing
expiration. In conjunction with its renewal, that agency anticipates that
much discussion and negotiations will be directed at specific efforts for
improving the appearance and management of the overall site.
