Shelton
FROM: David H. Getches `?' AUG 21 1986
DATE: August 22, 1986 MINED LAND RECLAMATION
Colo. Dept. of Natural Resources
SUBJECT: CLIMAX MINE TAILINGS
Recently I drove to Leadville from the north. The air was so full of
particulates from the hugh disposal area below the Climax Mine, that
visibility was virtually non-existent for parts of the journey. I found
it necessary to slow the car to a crawl because visibility was so bad at
some points. The condition went on for miles.
I presume that this is caused by the great decline in activity at the
mine and the consequent lack of wet tailing to hold down the dust in the
area. Nevertheless, it is an intolerable situation. What can be done?
Are there Mined Land Reclamation requirements that could be imposed or
enforced? Department of Health regulations? Anything else?
/ljc
1379A
