0 MORRISON-KNUDSEN COMPANY,INC.
calculating the factor of safety for each surface. The factor of safety
Cof each potential failure surface is defined as the ratio of the shear
force resisting the movement of the rock mass above the failure surface
to the shear force trying to induce this movement.
1 .4.2 Procedure for Analysis
A few profiles of the refuse pile were analyzed to determine their
factors of safety using the assumed physical properties. Figure 1-3 shows
profile number 1 , normal to the slope face, used for stability analysis.
In absence of any failing or failed condition in the existing refuse pile,
no back calculation was possible to check the validity of the assumed
physical properties .
Profiles from proposed cross-ridge refuse piles were analyzed using
different combinations of slope heights and angles to arrive at some guide-
lines for the proposed expansion.
Based upon site inspection, for the purpose of this analysis, it was
assumed that the refuse pile had a sufficiently high permeability to pre-
vent any pore pressure build-up.
1 .4.3 Discussion of Results of Stability Analysis
Selected results of the analysis of the present refuse pile are shown
on Table 1 .4.3-1 .
TABLE 1 .4.3-1
SELECTED RESULTS OF ANALYSIS OF THE
PRESENT REFUSE PILE
PROFILE SLOPE HEIGHT SLOPE ANGLE FACTOR OF SAFETY
NUMBER (ft) (degrees)
C 1 125' 38" 1 .50
2 160' 280 1 .58
1-10
