it
I
7. 0 INFLUENCE OF REFUSE DISPOSAL
The proposed waste disposal facility may influence both
ground water quantity and quality. Surface streams that may be
influenced by the facility will be diverted prior to the con-
struction so that neither the quality nor quantity of surface
water flows would be influenced.
The ground water quantity and water table elevation in
the outwash deposits should not change substantially. Any sur-
face runoff from the disposal pile and any potential seepage
from the facility's subdrains will be diverted into the sedi-
mentation ponds located below the facility. Because of the
clayey character of the upper part of the outwash deposits and
because of their very low permeability, no seepage into ground
water is expected. Continuous monitoring of the existing wells
will enable to verify this assumption prior, during, and after
the operation of the waste disposal facility.
For similar reasons, we expect that the changes in
ground water quality will be limited. However, a certain in-
crease in the total dissolved solids of the ground water down-
stream from the proposed disposal is anticipated.
Water quality monitoring in the existing sedimentation
pond , located below the present waste pile (Sample No. 396-
001) , can provide a certain indication of probable water
quality changes. From water quality data , shown in Tables 2
and 3, it is possible to compare surface and ground water
quality parameters in the study area. With the exception of
the sample collected on 4-19-1982, the difference between su -
j face and ground water in the study area and in the
j sedimentation pond is not substantial. The increase of total
dissolved solids by 246 mg/1 (30 %) and sulfates by 203 mg/1
(57 %) should not be considered to be substantial (only one
sample with sulfate contents in the sedimentation pond is
available) .
We hope that this evaluation of ground water conditions
and surface and ground water quality in the area of the pro-
posed waste disposal facility is sufficient for MLRD's
purposes .
March 26, 1984
T
GEO-HYDRO CONSULTING, INC.
Michal Bukovansk
Senior Engineering Geologist
19
r'tA41N1Dr1i^nuennu u..
