1
d
SURFACE DRAINAGE AND WATER QUALITY
OF THE
COAL CREEK DRAINAGE BASIN
PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO
INTRODUCTION
Coal Basin in Pitkin County is the location of five separate coal
mines operated by the Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. The
location of these mines and their access roads and service area in
Coal Basin are shown on Figure 1 and are described in detail in the
Management Plan (1) .11 In order to comply with applicable county,
state and federal requirements and to secure the necessary permits, -
studies have been made of the surface drainage and associated
structures, potential floods and water quality in the Coal Creek
drainage basin. This report contains the results of these studies
and a discussion-of the applicable background material.
The Coal Creek drainage basin is tributary to the Crystal River
which in turn is tributary to the Roaring Fork River which flows into
the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs.
I/ Numbers in parentheses throughout this report pertain to
references given in the Bibliography.
