1 <br /> d <br /> SURFACE DRAINAGE AND WATER QUALITY <br /> OF THE <br /> COAL CREEK DRAINAGE BASIN <br /> PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO <br /> INTRODUCTION <br /> Coal Basin in Pitkin County is the location of five separate coal <br /> mines operated by the Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. The <br /> location of these mines and their access roads and service area in <br /> Coal Basin are shown on Figure 1 and are described in detail in the <br /> Management Plan (1) .11 In order to comply with applicable county, <br /> state and federal requirements and to secure the necessary permits, - <br /> studies have been made of the surface drainage and associated <br /> structures, potential floods and water quality in the Coal Creek <br /> drainage basin. This report contains the results of these studies <br /> and a discussion-of the applicable background material. <br /> The Coal Creek drainage basin is tributary to the Crystal River <br /> which in turn is tributary to the Roaring Fork River which flows into <br /> the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs. <br /> I/ Numbers in parentheses throughout this report pertain to <br /> references given in the Bibliography. <br />
