MIDCONTINENT RESOURCES, INC.
DRAINAGE CONTROL STRUCTURES
FOR
COAL HAULAGE ROAD SYSTEM
COAL BASIN, PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO
Introduction
Midcontinent Resources, Inc. owns and operates five coal mines in Coal Basin,
Pitkin County, Colorado. These five coal mines are in Coal Basin in Western
Pitkin County within White River National Forest.
This coal mine operation currently requires a 72,460 foot long haulage road
system for truck haulage of coal to the mine facilities area (district office) .
This road system is composed of 7 road segments: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.
Access to the area is south and west from Glenwood Springs to Carbondale on
Colorado highway 51 then south to Redstone on Colorado highway 133. The Mine
District office is 3.5 miles west from Redstone on private roads.
The purpose of this study is to meet stipulations presented to Mid Continent
Resources, Inc. by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board on August 31, 1979.
Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. became involved with this project on October 5,
1979.
The nature of the stipulations involved the need for improvements on existing
drainage control structures. All of the 5 coal mines are underground mines with
portals at high altitude (10,000 ft. ) and in very mountainous terrain.
Purpose
The purpose of this report is to briefly describe and present an engineering
evaluation of the existing road conditions and existing drainage control struc-
tures as well as to propose additional drainage structures, i .e. , culvert, ditch
checks, etc. , for the 72,460 foot long haulage road system in Coal Basin.
I
8
