SEDIMENT AND DRAINAGE CONTROL <br /> STRUCTURES <br /> FOR <br /> Coal Mines 1 and 2 <br /> Coal Basin, Pitkin County <br /> INTRODUCTION <br /> The Coal Basin Mines 1 and 2 owned and operated by Mid-Continent <br /> Resources, Inc. at Carbondale, Colorado. These two coal mines are in Coal <br /> Basin in Western. Pitkin County within White River National Forest. (Figure <br /> 1) . <br /> Access to the area is south and west from Glenwood Springs to Carbon- <br /> dale on Colorado highway 8d" then south to Redstone on Colorado highway 133. <br /> The .line District Office is 3.5 miles west from Redstone on private roads. <br /> The purpose of this study is to meet stipulations presented to Mid- <br /> Continent Resources, Inc. by the Colorado Mired Land Reclamation Board <br /> on August 31, 1979. Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. became involved with <br /> this project on October 5, 1979. <br /> The nature of the stipulations involved the need for improvements on <br /> existing sedimentation and drainage control structures for Mires 1 and 2. <br /> All of these mines are underground mines with portals at high altitudes <br /> (10,000 ft.) and in very mountainous terrain. <br /> MET'dODS <br /> Design criteria for the :Mines 1 and 2 have been developed using U.S. <br /> Soil Conservation Service Methods. References used include; Determination <br /> of Peak Flows within Colorado (1977) , SCS Technical (rote 50, National <br /> Engineering Handbook :Number 4 and standard texts on hydraulics. <br /> -1- <br /> 24 <br />
