Sample Site Description,
Adjacent Property
In the summer of 1983, 12 soil samples at .9 locations were retrieved from a
large open meadow surrounded by low ridges. The samples were air-dried and
subjected to various chemical and physical analyses. The soil has a Mancos
shale parent material and is moderately well-drained. The soil has been formed
from alluvial Mancos shale from the surrounding shale ridges and is quite deep
in many places. It is a typical soil derived from Mancos shale: that is, it is
fairly fine-textured, blocky in structure, and dark brown in color.
All of the soils are near neutrality with respect to pH. Those that appear
to be more weathered are leached of any basic salts that may have been present
in the parent material. Soluble salt contents of the soils are low as are the
sodium adsorption ratios, thus indicating a low salt hazard. The texture of the
soils is a typical silt loam with a moderately high saturation percentage. The
organic matter contents of the soils are relatively high, probably due to the
abundant grass which the soil supports in most places. Several groves of aspen
trees are located near the perimeter of the meadow.
Nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the soils are low, but the remaining
fertility components are in abundance. Potassium is high, which is a character-
istic of most soils derived from Mancos shale.
112
