App. II-13-2
The coal de-gassification program will be implemented, with gas wells drilled from a site
west of Huntsman Ridge. The road, extending from No. 4 portal to the west side of
Huntsman Ridge will allow access to the drill site.
Mid-Continent has participated in studies of a possible co-generation facility which
would use the waste material from the Old Pile and the Sutey Pile for a small electric
power plant. Electricity, generated at the mine site, would be used for local power
needs. The parking lot at the central complex yard would be the probable site of the
plant. The conveyor belt which carries refuse to the Sutey pile could then be reversed,
bringing the waste material back for use in the co-generation facility. The piles would,
of course, diminish until entirely used up.
In our underground operations, Mid-Continent will pioneer the multi-lift longwall mining
method, which will allow mining of coal from the lower A-bed, which underlies the
B-bed, and has previously been considered unrecoverable.
Mid-Continent also remains interested in utilizing hydraulic mining techniques at the No.
4 Mine, although this remains a futuristic idea, and is not actively planned during the
permit term.
Mid-Continent will seek further permitting approvals, as necessary and appropriate,
before implementation of these programs.
5
