Chapter II
The primary buildings of the mine operation form a central complex around the
parking lot. The major surface facilities, such as roads and conveyor lines, extend
from the central complex area to the portals. Access to the mining operation is
through the central complex area. (Exhibit II-B-7).
On the west side of the parking, lot are the preparations plant and dryers, storage
and blending bins, and truck load-out.
Northwest of the parking lot, beyond the preparations plant area, is the Sutey Coal
Refuse Disposal Area.
South of the parking lot are two buildings, which contain (1) the bathhouse and
offices and (2) classrooms, engineering section and ambulance garage.
Southwest of the parking lot are the main and upper warehouses. Near the
warehouse facility is the electric power sub-station.
North of the parking lot is a maintenance shop/garage.
(2) Portals.
The road system and utility corridors connect the portal areas to the central
complex.
There are mine portals and yard area at the Adit/Rock Tunnel, and at Main Entries
#1, #2, #3, #4 and #5. The lamphouse at the Adit/Rock Tunnel also serves as an
office facility. Lamphouses, and facilities for the hoists and ventilation system are
the primary surface buildings at the main entry portals. In addition, the Briedan
plant is situated at the Entry #1 portal area.
(3) List of Buildings and Structures.
Appendix II-B-6, Surface Buildings and Structures, lists the surface buildings and
structures of the Coal Basin mining operations and the purpose, type of structure,
size and date of construction or installation of each. The buildings and structures
are grouped by general location in the permit area. Locations are indicated on the
maps of Ex. II-B-2 a through e. Impoundments, drainage system, refuse facility, etc.
are separately discussed later in this chapter.
b. Road System - Haul Roads.
(1) Background/Development
of Haul Roads.
In developing the mining operation, Mid-Continent constructed a 13.7 mile long road
system utilized for hauling coal from the portals to the preparation plant area (Exhibit
II-B-6). The system of haul roads is composed of 7 road segments. The segments
16
