Chapter II
The permit area is shown on map II-B-1; Sequence of Mining Operations during the
permit term is shown on maps II-B-2 & II-B-3. Surface Facilities and Disturbed Areas
are shown on Maps II-B-4 a through e.
b. Underground Mining
The coal reserves generally extend west and south of the Huntsman Ridge. Mining
follows the coal reserves to the west and south of Huntsman Ridge.
The underground workings have been developed as a series of five main entries
following the two coal seams down-dip from outcrop, with portal areas constructed
at outcrop points.
The coal seams outcrop along the sides of the Basin at elevations ranging from
approximately 9,500 feet to 10,700 feet.
Entries # 1, # 3, # 4 and # 5 were driven to produce coal from the lower B-bed
seam; Entry # 2 was driven to produce coal from the upper, M-bed seam.
Production from the workings accessed by each of the main entries (through 1986),
is as follows:
PRODUCTION
1956-1986
YEARS OF PRODUCTION TOTAL PRODUCTION*
No. 1 No. 1
1956-86 7,690,292
No. 2 No. 2
1965-66 4,864,625
1973-86
No. 3 No. 3
1966-82 4,949,828
1984-85
No. 4 No. 4
1969-80 817,137
No. 5 No. 5
1973-82 1,010,864
* Clean coal tonnages.
13
