Chapter II
• Coal Basin is in an avalanche-prone area. Heavy snows, steep gullies and cliffed
slopes encourage the development of unstable snow.
• The roads were mostly constructed in cuts using the sidecast method. Fills were
mostly used as a means of disposing of material from the cut.
(2) Present Usage.
The Adit/Rock tunnel, which is the primary transportation corridor of the mine, has been
operational since 1987. It extends to the underground workings of Mines #1 and #2.
Coal is transported from underground mine to surface storage on a conveyor belt which
extends through one bore of the twin-bore tunnel. Transport of personnel and
materials is through the other bore.
Ventilation and roof support facilities critical to the underground operations are
situated at the Mines #1 and #2 portal benches, and the entries from these portals are
escapeways. Deliveries of rock dust and aggregate material are made regularly to
facilities at this portal. The road is kept open during the winter months. The road
segments leading to these portals are designated Access Road to reflect current
usage.
Plans have been made but not implemented for lateral extensions of the tunnel to the
workings of Mines #3, #4 and #5. Access to and from these mines is over the road
system developed for coal haulage. These mines have been idle for a period of years,
and winter access over the road system is not maintained. Road segments leading to
these facilities are designated Light Use Road(s).
Anticipated future use of the portals while the mine is operational include continued use
of Portal Benches #1 and #2 for underground support facilities, possible mining of
remaining coal reserves from Mine #3, and use of the #5 entry to gain access to
unmined blocks of M-bed coal. Plans to de-gas the coal in advance of mining
anticipate use of the road from #4 mine portal over Huntsman Ridge to access the
lands above the coal, and use of#4 portal bench as a staging area for the de-gas
program.
3) Maintenance
The roads will be maintained as necessary for present use.
Snow Removal.
Snow clearing and avalanche control on roads and benches will be done as necessary
for access to facilities and for safety of personnel.
18
Revised 6/92
