Chapter II
Rock and refuse materials removed from the coal at the preparation plant are
conveyed to the coal refuse disposal area, known as the Sutey Pile, by covered
conveyor belt.
The Adit/Rock Tunnel will, on completion, extend laterally to access the workings of
Entries #3, #4 and #5. These are on stand-by status, awaiting an improvement in
market conditions for coal. If production resumes through these entries prior to
completion of the Adit/Rock Tunnel, mine operations are as follows:
Coal is transported from the working section by conveyor belt, up to the portal, then
discharged in the portal area. From the portal area, the coal will then be hauled by
truck down the haul roads to raw coal storage.
Men/materiel will be transported to/from the portals over the haul roads. Between
the portal to working sections of the mine, men/materiel will be transported by
mantrip.
b. Major Equipment.
The major equipment and its use in underground coal production is as follows:
(1) Mining.
Longwall shearer.
Function: cuts the coal in a longwall system.
Continuous miner.
Function: cuts coal, conveys it from the face. They're used to advance headings in
solid coal, including entries for main slope development, exploration, ventilation, and
in preparation for retreating and advancing longwalls. They're also used to "pull
pillars" in room-and-pillar operations.
(2) Coal Loading and Transportation.
Longwall face conveyor.
Function: Transports coal from the longwall face to the stage loader. It runs parallel
and adjacent to the face and is located between the face and the shields.
Longwall stage loader.
Function: Receives coal from the face conveyor, loads it onto the entry belt
conveyor.
Underground conveyor system.
Function: Tranports coal from the working face to the surface, and raw coal storage.
Overland conveyor system.
Transports coal from portal to storage.
4
