prior to completion of the Adit/Rock Tunnel extensions, coal will be transported to the
surface through the Main Entry, by conveyor belt, and loaded at the portal area for
transport by hill trucks down the haul road system to raw coal storage.
Surface Activity
Surface activities include transport of the coal to raw coal storage, storage, transport to
the wash plant for processing, processing, clean coal storage, blending and loading of
the coal for transport; transport of the coal to the load-out facility, loading of the coal for
transport to-the customer; and, at the processing stage, transport and disposal of coal
refuse, disposal of non-coal waste, maintenance of surface facilities, and
environmental programs to minimize the effect of operations on the affected land, air
and water resources of the area.
In addition, surface activity includes the movement of men and materiel as necessary
for mining, transport of the coal, disposal of refuse, etc.
Background/Development
The underground workings have been developed as a series of five main entries
following the two coal seams down-dip from outcrop, with portal areas constructed at
outcrop points. The Entries have historically been referred to as separate Mines. They
are:
The Dutch Creek No. 1 Mine, opened in 1956.
The L. S. Wood No. 2 Mine, opened in 1973.
The L. S. Wood No. 3 Mine, opened in 1966.
The Bear Creek No. 4 Mine, opened in 1969.
The Coal Basin No. 5 Mine, opened in 1973.
Entries # 1, # 3, # 4 and # 5 were driven to produce coal from the lower B-bed seam;
Entry # 2 was driven to produce coal from the upper, M-bed seam.
Construction of the facilities began in 1953. Most of the major mine facilities, such as
mine portals, haul roads, utility corridors and coal preparation plant facilities were
constructed and had been in use many years before passage of the Surface Mining
Reclamation and Control Act of 1977.
14
