A Subsidiary of Arch Western Rtuminous Group, LLC
May 11, 2012
Mr. James R. Stark
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
Office of Mined Land Reclamation
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Mountain Coal Company, LLC, West Elk Mine; Permit No. C- 1980 -007; Technical
Revision No. TR -129, Revised Longwall Panel E4 MDW Road and Pad locations
Dear Mr. Stark:
MOUNTAIN COAL
COMPANY L.L.C.
West Elk Mine
P.O Box 591
5174 Highway 133
Somerset, CO 81434
(970) 929-2200
Fax (970) 929 -5050
Mountain Coal Company, LLC (MCC) submits the attached application form, proposed public
notice, and map in application of Technical Revision No. TR -129 to revise the location of a few
MDW roads and pads for longwall panel E4. MCC and Forest Service (FS) personnel
conducted field reviews of the existing approved E4 MDW roads and pads last month to
determine which locations should be adjusted to provide better MDW access and pad
locations, resulting in less disturbance.
As an outcome of this revision, approximately 2,930 feet (0.9 acre) of new roads would be
constructed to replace 4,183 feet (1.3 acres) of previously approved roads, resulting in a net
reduction in land disturbance of approximately 0.4 acres. Two large previously approved
MDW pad polygons will also be deleted from the 2012 MDW drilling program. The new
locations were evaluated by the FS to identify any previously undocumented cultural
resources, T &E species and other resources of special interest. The FS will document the
findings of these evaluations during this revision process.
Please contact me at (970) 929 -2238 or by e-mail should you have questions regarding this
submittal.
Sincerely,
Kathleen G. Welt,
Environmental Engineer III
cc: Weston Norris - MCC
Mike Peacock - MCC
Joanne Williams - Gunnison Co.
