1,500 utilize the mine site now. Additionally, several hundred mule deer utilize the area. Mr. Luke also
indicated a prairie falcon utilizes the permit area. A bobcat has been observed and photographed
sunbathing by the mine office.
TMI conducts raptor monitoring on site. It also conducts elk surveys by its own initiative (not required by
any regulatory program). The Division of Wildlife radio collars deer in the area to track their movements.
We walked a section of reclamation in F Pit. TMI is currently backfilling in the area (see photo 6999).
Reclamation increased in age as we walked west. Weed species (houndstongue, kochia, etc.) were
prevalent in newer reclamation but diminish over time, giving way to the preferred seeded species.
Minor rills were forming on regraded areas where vegetation has not yet fully established. TMI removes
large shrubs from future mining areas and transplants them onto reclaimed areas. Although the majority
of the shrub will die back, the roots will take hold and the shrub will re -grow from its base. Shrub plots
provide immediate cover and browse for wildlife.
Reclamation is exceptionally successful throughout this mine site. No compliance issues were noted and
no enforcement actions were taken as a result of this inspection.
